Food in Andalusia is quite a science by itself!

When drinking sparkling water – GUIRI!

Ordering a paella at night – GUIRI!

Having a meal without a group of people in tow – GUIRI!

No intense and extensive debates at the table – GUIRI!

Pay immediately after meals and going straight home – GUIRI!

I probably would be able to go on about it for hours! And I bet you do not even have a clue what a GUIRI is and what food in Andalucia might have to do with this?

Guiri is a Spanish name for tourists – or immigrants who have not quite been integrated – and who stand out for their “behaviour”. They simply act very differently from Spaniards.

Being out in the sun at lunchtime – GUIRI!
Getting a bad sunburn – GUIRI!

However, I must stress that GUIRI is by no means a term for insulting people. It is more like a loving nickname, which they use to fool tourists a little 🙂

Food in Andalucia
Everything you should know before your next holiday!

In many ways, the habits and mealtimes of Andalusia are very different from those in “Northern Europe”. Andalusians think 🙂

Sparkling water, if it is very hot and you drink lots of it, will make your tummy bloaty – which is why the people here prefer to drink still water.
The Paella at night is far too heavy and will make you sleep very badly – so you eat that at lunchtime!
Having a meal without the entire family or your friends is only eating against the hunger – this is not worth it! The table is THE key location to meet up.
Instant payment to return home quickly – Hey, what about the Sobremesa?

For anyone who doesn’t quite get what I’m talking about I wrote this little (not to be taken too serious ) E-book. You get the chance to learn how to act like a proper Andalusian while staying with us, at least in the culinary sense, and about how to leave the GUIRI image behind for good 🙂
